Introduction
Coding allows you to change the settings of the car's electronic units that the manufacturer has made available. It can be used to activate, deactivate or adjust specific functions, provided the unit, its software and the vehicle equipment support the change.
Coding is different from ordinary fault reading. Diagnostics helps find a problem; coding changes the configuration of a control unit.
What can be changed through coding
Depending on the make, model and options of the car, coding may be used to modify:
- the behaviour of exterior and interior lighting
- individual comfort functions
- automatic door locking
- the operation of windows and mirrors
- displayed warnings
- multimedia system parameters
- settings linked to installed equipment
These are examples, not a guaranteed list. The same function may be available on one car and missing on another.
What coding cannot do
Coding does not add hardware that is physically not there. If the car lacks the required sensor, control unit, wiring or actuator, changing a software setting alone is usually not enough.
Coding is also not a substitute for repairing a defective unit and is not a way to bypass the vehicle's hardware limits.
Why the model and unit version matter
Cars of the same brand and even the same model can carry different generations of electronic units. The available options depend on the year, options fitted, software version and installed hardware.
It is therefore not enough to choose an interface by brand name alone. You have to consider the specific vehicle and the software you plan to use.
Coding, adaptation and programming are different operations
Coding changes the configuration that a unit exposes.
Adaptation or learning stores the working values and positions that the system uses during operation.
Programming or updating a unit writes software to the unit and usually has stricter requirements for the interface, vehicle power supply and the software used.
Which equipment to choose
Coding is often performed with dedicated brand-specific cables and interfaces. A universal OBD2 adapter may be enough for basic diagnostics but does not necessarily support coding of the required unit.
Before buying, check compatibility between the car, software, interface and the specific function. During coding, make sure the vehicle has a stable power supply and do not interrupt the process.
