Introduction
Live Data is the set of parameters that control units transmit in real time while the car is running. Unlike a stored fault code, Live Data shows what is happening with the sensors and systems at the very moment of the test.
This function is useful not only for seeing a single value but also for observing how it changes when the engine starts, warms up, when the pedal is pressed, under load, or while driving.
What parameters can be observed
Depending on the car and the selected unit, you may see:
- engine speed
- coolant and intake air temperature
- battery voltage
- pedal and throttle position
- fuel or boost pressure
- mass air flow
- fuel trims
- oxygen sensor readings
- individual wheel speeds
- pressure and temperature values across different systems
- states of switches and actuators
These are just examples. The actual list depends on the make, model, year, control unit, software and diagnostic interface.
How Live Data helps to find a fault
Parameters can be compared between a cold and a warm engine, at idle and under load, before and after a repair. It is sometimes useful to watch several related values simultaneously and plot them as a graph.
A single temperature or pressure reading is rarely enough for a final conclusion. It is important to understand the measurement conditions and to compare the actual value with what the system expects at that moment.
Live Data is especially valuable when the fault is not constant and the code alone does not give the full picture.
What Live Data does not show
Watching parameters does not replace a mechanical inspection, checking power supply, wiring and physical parts. A normal-looking value does not always rule out a fault, and an unusual value does not always mean that the displayed sensor is to blame.
Live Data is an analysis tool. The final decision is usually based on the combination of codes, parameters, conditions in which the problem appears, and physical checks.
Which equipment to choose
An inexpensive universal OBD2 adapter usually shows the basic engine parameters. For AT, ABS, SRS, climate, body electronics and other units, a brand-specific interface or a multi-brand scanner is often required.
