What is the FCA License (SGW) for Thinkcar?
Many FCA Group vehicles (Fiat, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, etc.) are equipped with a Secure Gateway Module (SGW) from 2017 year. This module blocks full access to the vehicle's internal systems via the standard OBD port, limiting diagnostics.
The "FCA / SGW License" is an official authorization that must be activated for your Thinkcar scanner to unlock the SGW and access all vehicle modules and functions: reading/clearing DTCs, activations, calibrations, adaptations, and bi-directional/active tests.
Without such a license, Thinkcar functions as a regular OBD scanner—you'll get the most basic functions (reading/clearing DTCs, basic diagnostics), but many features will be unavailable on vehicles with SGW.
The main differences between Thinkcar Thinkdiag and Thinkcar Thinkdiag 2.
| Feature / Specification | Thinkdiag | Thinkdiag 2 |
| CAN-FD protocol support |
❌ No — only standard protocols (CAN, ISO, UDS, etc.) |
✅ Yes — includes built-in CAN-FD support (useful for newer cars, e.g. recent GM vehicles) |
| Bluetooth version / Connectivity |
Uses Bluetooth 4.2 (or older) |
Uses Bluetooth 5.0 — more stable and faster connection |
| Hardware / Physical Features |
Basic OBD-adapter only (no extra indicators or cable) |
Upgraded hardware: includes soft rubber sleeve, OBD2 cable, plus power / vehicle / communication indicator lights |
| Vehicle / Protocol Compatibility |
Supports many common protocols (KWP2000, CAN, ISO, UDS, etc.) and ~ 115 car brands. |
Broader compatibility — supports same basic protocols + CAN-FD, about ~ 120+ brands and newer vehicles (including certain post-2020 models) |
| Functionality (Diagnostics, Reset, Coding, Active Tests, Services) |
Full OBD2 functions, diagnostics of main vehicle systems, read/clear fault codes, live data stream, some reset/service functions. |
Same core diagnostics + enhanced features: full system OE-level diagnostics, wide set of service/reset functions (oil reset, EPB, TPMS, DPF, IMMO/key programming, adaptations, etc.), ability for ECU-coding, active tests / actuator tests / key programming / live-data graphs. |
