Why apps produce different results
Standard OBD‑II normally exposes engine faults and live data. ABS, SRS, service procedures, coding and other modules depend on the marque, model, year, protocol, app licence and adapter hardware. A button in an app does not guarantee support on a particular vehicle.
Choosing an adapter for Android, iPhone and Windows
Android
Bluetooth Classic is widely supported by Android apps; BLE and Wi‑Fi also work when the app explicitly supports them. Check the developer requirements for marque-specific diagnostics.
iPhone and iPad
A regular Bluetooth Classic ELM327 is generally not the right choice for iOS. Use BLE or Wi‑Fi listed as compatible by the app developer. With Wi‑Fi, the phone temporarily joins the adapter network.
Windows
Windows software may use USB, compatible Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi. Marque-specific packages can require a particular interface, speed, bus switch or adapter cable.
Short selection scenarios
Android
Bluetooth Classic or BLE with Car Scanner/Torque for basic OBD‑II diagnostics.
iPhone and iPad
BLE or Wi‑Fi; the app must explicitly support the selected interface.
Ford and Mazda
A FORScan-compatible adapter; additional buses require HS/MS‑CAN support.
Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia
MultiECUScan or AlfaOBD; some modules require coloured cables.
Renault and Dacia
PyRen/PyClip only with a supported model, database and interface.
Suzuki
SZ Viewer after confirming the exact model, ECU and connection type.
Nissan
EconTool for supported models and modules; coverage is not universal.
Windows and laptop
An interface supported by the software; USB suits longer procedures.

Popular universal apps
Show details
Car Scanner: an accessible universal starting point
Useful for standard fault codes, live data, dashboards and connection profiles. Extended functions depend on the vehicle, selected profile, adapter and app version.
Torque: Android and custom dashboards
Torque focuses on Android dashboards, graphs, logging and PIDs. Available data depends on the vehicle, imported PIDs and connection quality.
Carista: service and customisation on supported cars
Carista can provide service and customisation features on supported models. Availability depends on the vehicle, adapter, version and subscription. Generic ELM327 is officially for Android; iOS requires an adapter from Carista's compatible list.
Marque-specific applications
Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury
FORScan targets supported vehicles from these marques. Access depth depends on model, module, licence and interface; some buses need automatic or manual HS/MS‑CAN switching.
Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep and Dodge
MultiECUScan and AlfaOBD cover supported FCA/Stellantis vehicles. Some modules require coloured adapter cables or a different interface. Windows, Android and iOS licences may be sold separately.
Renault and Dacia
PyRen/PyClip are community projects for compatible Renault/Dacia vehicles. Installation and coverage depend on the version, database and interface; use only functions you understand.
Other specialist options
OpenDiag, SZ Viewer and EconTool focus on particular vehicle and module families. Confirm the exact model, year, ECU and developer requirements first.
What ELM327 can realistically do
Standard OBD‑II diagnostics
Read and clear standard engine codes, view readiness and some freeze-frame data when the vehicle supports it.
Live data
RPM, temperatures, fuel trims, voltage and other PIDs exposed by the selected module.
Additional modules
ABS, SRS, transmission and body modules only when the app, vehicle and required bus are supported.
Service procedures
Resets and adaptations only on supported models and according to the procedure instructions.
Coding
Configuration changes require an exact vehicle profile, stable power and an understanding of the consequences.
Programming
Module flashing is not a typical universal ELM327 function; do not rely on it without explicit developer confirmation.
Bluetooth Classic, BLE and Wi‑Fi
| Interface | Usually suitable for | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth Classic | Android, Windows | Usually unsuitable for iPhone/iPad; app support still matters. |
| Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) | Android, iPhone/iPad | The app must support BLE; Windows depends on the application and Bluetooth stack. |
| Wi‑Fi | Android, iPhone/iPad, Windows | The device joins the adapter network, which may affect mobile data and automatic network switching. |
Which HIDPLANET adapter to choose
The first four options cover the most common scenarios. Before buying, check the connection type, platform, vehicle and app.

Does ELM327 work with every car?
No. The connector and protocol, ECU and selected application must all be compatible.
Why can the app see only the engine?
That is the usual scope of standard OBD‑II. Other modules need marque support and sometimes another bus or cable.
Will a Bluetooth ELM327 work with iPhone?
Bluetooth Classic generally will not. For iOS, choose BLE or Wi‑Fi explicitly supported by the app.
Is BLE better than Wi‑Fi?
Not universally. BLE is convenient for iOS; Wi‑Fi is broad but creates its own network. App compatibility matters more.
Can every fault be cleared?
Only a code from a reachable module. If the fault cause remains, the code will return.
Can I code my vehicle?
Sometimes, with marque-specific software on supported models. It is not a universal ELM327 capability.
Do I need HS/MS‑CAN?
For some Ford/Mazda modules, yes. Certain adapters switch automatically; basic adapters may not support it.
Are the apps free?
Many offer a free tier, while extended features, subscriptions or licences may cost extra.
Why is the connection unstable?
Check socket power, interface type, connection settings, adapter quality and whether another device is connected.
What should a beginner choose?
Start with compatible BLE/Wi‑Fi, or Bluetooth Classic on Android, and a universal app; use specialist software for marque tasks.
