ThinkDiag and ThinkDiag 2: multi-brand diagnostics, subscription and limits — ThinkDiag and ThinkDiag 2 are Thinkcar mobile multi-brand diagnostic interfaces. They work through the official app and Bluetooth; diagnostic depth depends on the vehicle, control unit, region, app and active software access.
Android/iOS: verify current official-store availability and compatibility for your region before purchase.
What it is and who it suits
This is not a basic ELM327 adapter and not a replacement for dealer equipment. ThinkDiag is practical for owners of several cars, advanced users and small workshops when accessible modules, data, service procedures and a phone-based report are needed. A dedicated interface is normally deeper for one brand; a professional standalone scanner is better for sustained workshop use.
ThinkDiag, ThinkDiag 2 and renewal
| Product role | ThinkDiag | ThinkDiag 2 | One-year digital software-access renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product role | Mobile hardware interface; the base model in this range. | Newer mobile hardware interface; the card highlights CAN FD, but support must be checked for the specific vehicle. | One-year digital software-access renewal; no device is included. |
Before purchase and activation
Check that the official app is available for your Android or iOS device, account region, supported OS version and Bluetooth requirements. After purchase, install the official app, sign in or create an account, bind the serial number and activate access. Do not buy a renewal code until account and device compatibility has been confirmed.
Subscription and activation
Create an account and activate the device in the official app before use. HIDPLANET cards for ThinkDiag, ThinkDiag 2 and the renewal code state a one-year period. The app store and feature access can differ by model, region and manufacturer terms. After expiry, do not assume that all brand modules, updates, service functions or active tests remain available: check the app for the specific account. Basic OBD-II, previously downloaded modules and cloud features are not represented as guaranteed without confirmation.
What happens after expiry
The official app description confirms a diagnostic-software store and subscription model, but does not provide a universal promise that a particular package remains usable after expiry. Brand access, updates, service operations, active tests and cloud data must therefore be checked in the app. Product 773 is software access only.
One-year digital software-access renewal; no device is included.
Functions and limits
The app may provide DTC reading and clearing, live data, Auto VIN, scans of accessible systems, reports, service resets, active tests, adaptations and coding. None is universal: availability depends on make, model, year, ECU, equipment, voltage, authorisation and subscription. Seeing a menu item does not guarantee that the vehicle supports the operation.
Practical diagnostic workflow
Maintain stable vehicle voltage, follow the ignition instructions, save a full report and DTCs first, then analyse live data. Clearing a code without correcting its cause is not a repair. Before an active test ensure the actuator can be operated safely; save original values before adaptation or coding.
When connection or a function is unavailable
Check OBD power, Bluetooth and app permissions, VIN/make/year selection, ECU selection, active licence, account region and battery voltage. Repeat the standard connection sequence. A missing menu or ECU refusal does not by itself prove an adapter fault: the vehicle may not support the function or may require SGW/SFD/official authorisation.
Active tests, coding and protected systems
A bidirectional test commands an actuator; it is not data reading and should be run only with the vehicle in a safe condition and with understanding of the result. Coding, adaptation, calibration, online coding, programming and flashing are different operations. Do not treat a mobile Bluetooth interface as suitable for programming or flashing without a confirmed process, stable power and required authorisation. SFD, SGW, immobiliser and key work requires a lawful right to the vehicle and may require an official account; bypasses are neither published nor promised.
Choosing the right tool
ELM327 is sensible for basic OBD-II work and permanent gauges. ThinkDiag fits when brand-specific systems and a mobile multi-brand tool are required. VCDS/ODIS, OP-COM, FORScan, Techstream, BMW ENET and K+DCAN remain preferable where maximum single-brand depth is needed. A tablet scanner is better for high workload, accessories and workshop workflows.
FAQ
1. Android and iOS?
the official app is listed for mobile devices; check the current app and region before purchase.
2. All control units?
only those accessible for the specific vehicle and licence.
3. Active tests?
only for supported ECUs with active access.
4. Coding?
selected supported operations, not a universal promise.
5. Is software included?
hardware and software access are stated separately on the product card.
6. After expiry?
verify the account in the app; a separate one-year renewal is sold.
7. Keys?
it is not a universal key programmer.
8. CAN FD on ThinkDiag 2?
a model distinction; vehicle compatibility still applies.
9. Is internet required?
it may be needed for sign-in, module downloads, activation, updates and cloud functions.
10. Can it stay in the OBD socket?
consider power draw and security; removal after use is normally safer.
11. Can it be used on 24 V?
only when the exact device specification explicitly permits it.
12. Which app languages are available?
check the current app and vehicle-module language before purchase.
13. Does it work without an account?
activation and subscription access assume an official account.
14. Can it program an ECU?
coding is not flashing; universal programming is not promised.
15. What is Auto VIN?
an attempt to identify the VIN automatically; manual selection can still be necessary.
16. Why is an ECU missing?
equipment, gateway, protocol, voltage, licence and vehicle selection all matter.
17. Is a battery support unit needed?
stable power is advisable for long tests and adaptations, following vehicle requirements.
18. Can it access SGW or SFD?
official authorisation may be required; bypass is not provided.
19. Is product 773 a scanner?
no, it is digital access renewal without hardware.
20. How do I choose ThinkDiag or ThinkDiag 2?
compare vehicle protocols, the model card, price and function availability before ordering.
