Installation instructions for Techstream on Windows 7 or 8.1 (64-bit)
If you purchased a MINI-VCI J2534 cable and the disc does not contain an unpacked driver but only the installer MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.msi, which indeed does not work on any Windows x64 system and gives an error, yet must be installed or the cable will not work — don’t worry.
This problem is solved by installing the MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.msi manually as follows:
-
Create a folder on drive C:\Temp
-
Copy the file MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.msi into the folder C:\Temp
-
Open Command Prompt with Administrator rights and run the following command:
This command will extract all contents from the MSI file into the folder C:\Temp\mvci
-
Delete the file MVCI Driver for TOYOTA.msi from C:\Temp\mvci (you no longer need it). You may also delete it from C:\Temp
-
Go to C:\Program Files (x86) and create a folder **\XHorse Electronics*, and inside it another folder **\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA TIS*. Then move all contents from C:\Temp\mvci into this new folder.
-
Connect the MINI VCI cable to the USB port.
IMPORTANT: When the automatic driver installation begins, cancel it. The device will remain unrecognized. -
Open Device Manager and find two malfunctioning devices in the list — they will have a yellow icon indicating that Windows failed to install drivers (usually they appear under “Other devices”).
Right-click each malfunctioning device → choose Update Driver → Browse my computer for driver software → Browse "My Computer"… and specify the path:
(Check Include subfolders).
Click Next and wait until the drivers are installed.
You should now see two new devices:
-
USB Serial Converter under USB Controllers
-
USB Serial Port (COM---) under Ports (COM & LPT), where the dashes represent your COM port number.
-
Next, go to:
and run FirmwareUpdateTool.exe.
In the program window click Device Info.
You should see the device information fields filled in.
If you see this, it means your MINI-VCI is working under 64-bit Windows and can be used with programs such as Techstream.
-
Now install Techstream using Techstream.exe (any version). Do not run it after installation yet.
-
To activate it, go to:
Find the line:
and change 1 to 0, then save the file.
Now we must make the program detect the cable.
For Techstream to recognize MINI-VCI on Windows x64, the registry must be edited as follows:
-
Open the Windows Registry Editor.
On Windows 8.1 x64 the path is:
You must have the folder *\PassThruSupport.04.04* and inside it a subfolder (for example, DENSO CORPORATION — TIS Techstream VIM).
Inside it you need the following parameters:
There is also a section:
But you can avoid editing the registry manually by downloading and running the supplied registry file.
-
Start Techstream. Go to Setup | VIM Select — the menu should show “XHorse — MVCI”.
-
Connect the MVCI cable to USB, launch the program, then click Connect to Vehicle in Techstream.
If everything is working, you will be prompted to confirm the vehicle/year/model, and once connected to the car and the engine is running, you will have access to the diagnostic interface.
